5 Common Mistakes with Marble & Travertine
5 Common Mistakes with Marble & Travertine
Marble looks luxurious but punishes mistakes fast. These five errors cause most of the damage we see in kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways.
Mistake #1
Using vinegar or citrus-based cleaners
Why this is a problem
Marble is calcium carbonate. Any acid - vinegar, lemon juice, cola, even some "natural" cleaners - dissolves the surface and leaves dull, rough etch marks. The damage is chemical, not a stain, so wiping harder makes it worse.
How to fix it
Light etches can be polished out with Lithofin MN Polishing Cream and a soft cloth. Deep etches need professional honing.
Prevention
Use only pH-neutral cleaners. Lithofin MN Wash & Clean is formulated for daily marble care - it cleans without any acid.
Mistake #2
Skipping the sealer after installation
Why this is a problem
Unprotected marble absorbs red wine, coffee, and cooking oil within minutes. Once a stain sits below the polished surface, removal becomes difficult and sometimes impossible.
How to fix it
For oil stains, apply Lithofin MN Stain-Stop as a poultice compress overnight. For organic stains (wine, coffee), try Lithofin Stain-Stop which can draw out embedded discolouration.
Prevention
Seal new marble within the first week. Apply Lithofin MN Stain-Stop or MN Protection to all surfaces, including edges and backsplashes.
Mistake #3
Scrubbing with abrasive pads or powder
Why this is a problem
Steel wool, scouring pads, and gritty cleaning powders scratch the polished finish. Once scratched, the surface loses its reflective depth and collects dirt faster.
How to fix it
Minor scratches respond to Lithofin MN Polishing Cream. Widespread scratching requires professional re-polishing.
Prevention
Clean only with soft cloths, microfibre, or non-abrasive sponges. For stubborn spots, let the cleaning product do the work - don't rely on mechanical force.
Mistake #4
Letting spills sit overnight
Why this is a problem
Marble is porous. Even sealed marble will eventually absorb a puddle of red wine or tomato sauce left for hours. Time is everything with spills on marble.
How to fix it
Blot immediately - don't wipe (wiping spreads the liquid). For dried stains, use Lithofin MN Power-Clean diluted 1:10 and apply as a dwell treatment.
Prevention
Wipe spills within minutes. Keep a small spray bottle of diluted Lithofin MN Wash & Clean and a cloth near the kitchen counter.
Mistake #5
Using generic "all-purpose" floor cleaner
Why this is a problem
Most all-purpose cleaners contain surfactants that build up on marble, creating a dull film. Some contain hidden acids (phosphoric, citric). Over months the marble loses its natural lustre.
How to fix it
Strip the residue buildup with Lithofin MN Power-Clean (1:10), then re-seal with Lithofin MN Stain-Stop.
Prevention
Stick to one product: Lithofin MN Wash & Clean for all routine marble cleaning. It cleans and leaves a micro-protective film.
