Resin Removal - Expert Removal & Treatment Guide

Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per m²

What is Resin Removal?

Resin, epoxy, and adhesive residues can be challenging to remove from stone and tile surfaces. These substances can bond strongly to the surface, creating a sticky or glossy film that detracts from the natural beauty of the material. If not addressed promptly, the residues can harden and become even more difficult to remove. The presence of these residues can also interfere with the application of sealants and other surface treatments, leading to unsatisfactory results.

How to Identify It

Resin and adhesive residues typically appear as a glossy or sticky film on the surface. To diagnose, run your finger across the area; if it feels tacky or leaves a residue on your finger, it is likely resin or adhesive. These residues may also trap dust and dirt, making the surface appear dull or dirty.

Common Causes

  • Use of adhesives during tile or stone installation
  • Spills from resin-based products during construction or renovation
  • Improper cleaning methods that leave residues behind
  • Allowing resin or adhesive to cure on the surface
  • Inadequate surface preparation before applying adhesives

Prevention

  • Clean up spills immediately to prevent hardening
  • Use protective coverings on surfaces when working with adhesives
  • Choose low-residue adhesives when possible
  • Follow manufacturer's instructions for adhesive application and removal
  • Conduct a test area before applying adhesives to ensure compatibility with the surface

Treatment by Surface Type

Natural Stone

Risk level: Medium

Use Lithofin Resin-EX. Apply Resin-EX according to the manufacturer's instructions. Allow it to penetrate the residue for the recommended time before scrubbing with a non-abrasive pad and rinsing thoroughly.
