Stone care after a renovation
Stone care after a renovation
Construction is finished but the stone floors and walls are covered in cement dust, grout haze, paint splatters, and adhesive residue. The goal is to restore surfaces without causing new damage.
For: Homeowners after a building project, renovation contractors, property managers
Phase 1: Dry removal (Day 1)
Remove all loose debris before any wet cleaning. Construction dust mixed with water creates a slurry that's harder to remove than dry dust.
Vacuum with a soft brush attachment. Sweep corners and edges. Peel off any protective tape. Scrape off paint drops with a plastic scraper - never metal on polished stone.
Phase 2: Cement haze removal (Day 2)
The grey film on tiles is dried cement residue. It needs a specific product - regular cleaners won't dissolve it.
Product: Lithofin KF Cement Residue Remover
For acid-sensitive stone (marble, limestone, terrazzo): use Lithofin MN Builders' Clean instead, diluted 1:10. For ceramic, porcelain, granite: apply KF Cement Residue Remover diluted 1:5. Pre-wet the surface, apply, let dwell 5 minutes, scrub with a nylon brush, rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Phase 3: General deep clean (Day 3-4)
After cement haze is gone, address residual grime, grout staining, and construction marks.
Product: Lithofin MN Power-Clean
Dilute 1:5 for heavy soiling. Apply in 2 m² sections, scrub, and rinse. Change the rinse water frequently - dirty rinse water redeposits grime. Two cleaning passes are usually needed.
Phase 4: Protection (Day 7-10)
Wait at least 3 days after final cleaning for the stone to dry before sealing. Moisture trapped under sealant causes white haze.
Product: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop
Apply one coat to all stone and unglazed tile surfaces. A second coat for kitchen countertops, bathroom floors, and heavily used areas. Don't forget edges, thresholds, and window sills.
Pro Tips
- Photograph the surfaces before cleaning - if damage was caused during construction, you need evidence
- Test EVERY cleaning product on a hidden area first. Post-renovation is not the time for surprises
- Work from top to bottom: clean walls before floors so dirty water from walls doesn't stain freshly cleaned floors
- If the builder used silicone where grout should be, flag it now - silicone in tile joints is a mould magnet
