Quartz Composite FAQ - Stone Care Questions
Quartz Composite - Frequently Asked Questions
6 questions about caring for quartz composite
Does my quartz composite countertop (Silestone, Caesarstone) need sealing?
Most quartz composite countertops come pre-sealed from the factory and do not need additional sealing. They are engineered to be non-porous with resin binding. However, over years of use, the surface can become slightly less resistant. Use pH-neutral cleaners only (Lithofin EASY-CARE or MN Easy-Clean). Avoid strong acids, alkalis, and bleach. If the surface loses water repellency after years, a light application of Lithofin Stainstop PLUS can help.
Recommended: Lithofin EASY-CARE, Lithofin MN Easy-Clean, Lithofin Stainstop PLUS
Natural stone vs quartz composite - which is better for a kitchen?
Quartz composite is more practical: non-porous (factory-sealed), consistent colour, very low maintenance, heat-resistant up to ~150°C. Natural stone is more beautiful: each slab is unique, natural veining, develops character over time. Granite is the most practical natural stone for kitchens (hard, acid-resistant). Marble is the most beautiful but high-maintenance. Our recommendation: if you want low maintenance, choose quartz composite. If you value natural beauty and are willing to care for it, choose natural stone with proper Lithofin protection.
Recommended: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop
Can I put hot pans directly on my stone countertop?
It depends on the stone. Natural stone (marble, granite, limestone) is generally heat-resistant and can tolerate hot pans, but thermal shock from very hot cookware can potentially cause cracking in some stones. Quartz composite should NEVER have hot pans placed directly on it - the resin binder can discolour or crack above 150°C. Best practice: always use trivets or heat pads on all countertop types. This is especially important for marble (which can yellow from heat) and quartz composite.
Recommended: Lithofin MN Basic Protection, Lithofin MN Stain-Stop, Lithofin TC Impregnator
How does the care for natural stone differ from engineered stone?
Natural stone requires specific care to maintain its beauty and integrity, often needing impregnators and specialized cleaners. Engineered stone is generally more resistant to stains and scratches, allowing for easier maintenance with standard cleaners. However, both types benefit from regular cleaning and protection, such as with Lithofin products tailored for each stone type.
Recommended: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop, Lithofin WAX, Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner
What is the difference between water-based and solvent-based protection?
Water-based protection is generally safer for indoor use and easier to clean up, while solvent-based protection often provides a stronger, more durable seal. However, solvent-based products may emit stronger odors and require more ventilation during application. For effective sealing, consider Lithofin MN Stain-Stop as a water-based option.
Recommended: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop, Lithofin KF Stain-Stop, Lithofin WAX
What are the differences between quartz composite and natural quartz?
Quartz composite is engineered from crushed quartz and resin, making it less porous and more resistant to stains than natural quartz. Natural quartz, while beautiful, can be more susceptible to staining and requires regular sealing. Both can benefit from products like Lithofin MN Stain-Stop for added protection.
Recommended: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop
