Lithofin MN Basic Protection
Art. 165-11-B
Your newly laid limestone bathroom floor absorbs every splash and shows dark marks within seconds. MN Basic Protection stops the water before it enters the pores, leaving the stone unchanged and easy to mop.
What MN Basic Protection Does
MN Basic Protection is a neutral impregnator for natural stone. The solvent-based formula penetrates up to 2 mm, lines each capillary with a hydrophobic siloxane layer, and reduces water absorption by approx. 90 % while keeping vapour permeability above 80 %. pH-neutral chemistry (pH 7) means no risk of etching on acid-sensitive stones.
When to Use
- Limestone shower walls after deep cleaning with MN Power-Clean - apply undiluted, 40 ml/m².
- Polished marble foyer floor needing invisible protection - apply undiluted, 33 ml/m².
- Rough granite outdoor terrace handled in the granite terrace care guide - apply undiluted, 70 ml/m².
- Sandstone patio before the rainy season to cut moss growth - apply undiluted, 80 ml/m².
- Terrazzo staircases in public buildings for easier daily maintenance with MN Wash & Clean - apply undiluted, 50 ml/m².
How to Apply
- Ensure the stone is clean, bone-dry, and 5-25 °C.
- Spread MN Basic Protection evenly with a lint-free cloth or short-pile roller until the surface looks wet.
- After 5 minutes, redistribute any puddles; stone should stay glossy-wet for at least 10 minutes to allow penetration.
- Wipe off all residue within 30 minutes using a dry cloth; do not rinse.
Coverage: 10-30 m²/L depending on porosity. Light foot traffic after 2 hours; full use and washing after 24 hours. Re-treat interior zones every 3-5 years, exterior zones every 2-3 years.
Surface Compatibility
The impregnator excels on marble, limestone, sandstone, granite, bluestone, and terrazzo because its pH-neutral carrier neither etches Mohs 3 carbonates nor leaves film on dense Mohs 7 siliceous stones. Do not use on wet or previously sealed surfaces; the product must penetrate to perform.
Choosing the Right Product
For standard water repellency without colour change, choose MN Basic Protection. For areas exposed to oil and food, use MN Stain-Stop. For colour enrichment on slate or basalt, select MN Colour Intensifier.
Pro Tips
- Always mask adjacent glass or metal; solvent can leave streaks that need mechanical polishing.
- Warm stone (18-22 °C) absorbs evenly, preventing patchy curing and saving up to 10 % product.
- Test water beading after 24 hours; if droplets flatten within 30 seconds, apply a second thin coat at 20 ml/m².

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MN Basic Protection and MN Stain-Stop?
MN Basic Protection repels water only; MN Stain-Stop repels both water and oil and lasts 4–5 years on interiors.
How often should I re-seal limestone with MN Basic Protection?
Interior limestone floors need re-application after 3–5 years; outdoor terraces after 2–3 years due to UV and rain.
Why must the marble be completely dry before MN Basic Protection?
Residual moisture blocks penetration; even 1 % surface water can cut absorption depth by 50 % and reduce durability.
Is MN Basic Protection a coating that changes granite gloss?
No, it sits inside the pores, leaves no surface film, and keeps the original 60–70 GU gloss level unchanged.
