5 Common Mistakes with Concrete & Pavers
5 Common Mistakes with Concrete & Pavers
Concrete is everywhere - driveways, patios, garage floors, countertops. Its alkaline nature and porosity create specific problems that catch people off guard.
Mistake #1
Sealing new concrete too early
Why this is a problem
Fresh concrete needs 28 days to fully cure. Sealing too early traps moisture and alkali inside, causing the sealer to bubble, peel, or turn white (blushing).
How to fix it
Strip the failed sealer. Let the concrete cure fully, then re-seal.
Prevention
Wait minimum 28 days after pouring. Do a moisture test: tape plastic sheeting down for 24 hours - if the underside is dry, you can seal.
Mistake #2
Using acid-based driveway cleaners
Why this is a problem
Acid dissolves the calcium in concrete, roughening the surface and making it more porous. This creates a cycle: the rougher surface attracts more dirt, requiring more aggressive cleaning.
How to fix it
You can't reverse acid damage to concrete. Seal the roughened surface to slow further degradation.
Prevention
Use alkaline cleaners like Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean for concrete driveways and paths.
Mistake #3
Pressure washing without pre-treatment
Why this is a problem
Pressure washing alone removes surface dirt but doesn't kill algae and moss roots. The growth returns within weeks, often thicker than before because the pressure washing roughened the surface.
How to fix it
Apply Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean first to kill organic growth at the root. Then pressure wash to remove dead material.
Prevention
Always pre-treat with an algae remover before pressure washing. Clean in autumn before winter moisture accelerates growth.
Mistake #4
Ignoring oil stains on the garage floor
Why this is a problem
Motor oil penetrates deep into concrete within hours. The longer it sits, the deeper it goes. After weeks, the stain is essentially permanent without specialist treatment.
How to fix it
Fresh oil: absorb with cat litter, then clean with Lithofin MN Power-Clean undiluted. Old oil: apply as a poultice with paper towels overnight.
Prevention
Seal garage floors with Lithofin MN Stain-Stop. Place drip trays under vehicles.
Mistake #5
De-icing concrete in the first winter
Why this is a problem
New concrete (less than 1 year old) is especially vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage. De-icing salts increase the number of freeze-thaw cycles, causing scaling and spalling.
How to fix it
Patch spalled areas with concrete repair compound. Seal after patching.
Prevention
Avoid de-icing salt on concrete less than one year old. Use sand for traction instead.
