5 Common Mistakes with Glass & Mosaic
Glass mosaic is non-porous and chemical-resistant, but the sheer number of grout joints creates a maintenance challenge. Most problems are about the joints, not the glass.
Mistake #1
Using abrasive cleaners on glass tiles
Why this is a problem
Glass scratches more easily than ceramic. Abrasive cream cleaners, scouring pads, and even some gritty eco-cleaners leave fine scratches that dull the reflective surface permanently.
How to fix it
Scratched glass tiles cannot be polished out like stone. Replacement is the only fix for deep scratches.
Prevention
Clean with a soft cloth and Lithofin KF Wash & Clean only. For stubborn deposits, let the cleaner dwell - don't scrub harder.
Mistake #2
Leaving epoxy grout haze on the surface
Why this is a problem
Epoxy grout is common with glass mosaic for waterproofing. But epoxy haze hardens within hours and becomes nearly impossible to remove with normal cleaners after 24 hours.
How to fix it
Lithofin KF Epoxy Residue Remover can soften cured epoxy haze. Apply thickly, cover with plastic film overnight, then scrub.
Prevention
Clean epoxy haze within the working time specified by the grout manufacturer - usually 20-45 minutes.
Mistake #3
Using acidic limescale remover on grout joints
Why this is a problem
While glass itself resists acid, the cement-based grout between tiles does not. Acid dissolves grout, creating recessed joints that collect dirt and moisture.
How to fix it
Re-grout dissolved joints. Use epoxy grout for wet areas to prevent future acid damage.
Prevention
Use Lithofin KF Cement Residue Remover carefully - apply only to tile surfaces, not joints. Prevent limescale with a squeegee after showering.
Mistake #4
Cleaning with vinegar ("natural" cleaning)
Why this is a problem
Vinegar is acid. On glass tiles it's harmless, but it etches and dissolves cement grout over months of regular use. The tiles look fine but the joints deteriorate.
How to fix it
Patch damaged grout. Switch to a pH-neutral cleaner immediately.

Mistake #5
Using silicone sealant instead of grout
Why this is a problem
Silicone in glass mosaic fields (not just corners) attracts mould and discolours. It also stretches differently than the tiles, eventually pulling away from the glass edges.
How to fix it
Remove silicone with a blade and silicone remover. Re-grout with proper tile grout or epoxy grout.
Prevention
Use silicone only at movement joints (wall-to-floor, corner joints). Use grout for tile-to-tile joints.
