5 Common Mistakes with Limestone

5 Common Mistakes with Limestone

Limestone is soft, porous, and acid-sensitive - a combination that makes it beautiful but demanding. Most damage comes from treating it like granite.

Mistake #1

Using acidic descalers in limestone bathrooms

Why this is a problem

Limescale removers are acid-based - but limestone IS lime. The descaler dissolves the stone along with the limescale, leaving rough, pitted areas that collect even more limescale.

How to fix it

Light damage can be smoothed with Lithofin MN Polishing Cream. Severe pitting needs professional attention.

Prevention

For limescale on limestone, use a plastic scraper and Lithofin MN Wash & Clean. Prevent buildup by squeegeeing after each shower.

Mistake #2

Walking on unsealed limestone floors in winter

Why this is a problem

Wet shoes, salt from de-iced pavements, and mud carry acids and minerals deep into unsealed limestone. After one winter, the stone can be permanently discoloured along walkways.

How to fix it

Deep clean with Lithofin MN Power-Clean, then apply Lithofin MN Stain-Stop in two coats.

Prevention

Seal limestone floors before winter. Place mats at all entrances. Clean salt residue promptly with clean water.

Mistake #3

Ignoring efflorescence (white salt deposits)

Why this is a problem

Those white patches aren't just cosmetic - they signal moisture moving through the stone. Ignoring them lets the moisture cycle continue, which can eventually loosen tiles or delaminate the stone.

How to fix it

Remove efflorescence with Lithofin MN Builders' Clean (diluted), then address the moisture source. Re-seal after the stone dries completely.

Prevention

Ensure proper waterproofing membranes under limestone floors. Seal all six sides of tiles before installation.

Mistake #4

Applying colour enhancer on polished limestone

Why this is a problem

Colour enhancers are designed for rough or honed surfaces where they can penetrate. On polished limestone, the product sits on top, creating a blotchy, uneven film that's difficult to remove.

How to fix it

Remove the surface film with Lithofin MN Power-Clean. Multiple applications may be needed.

Prevention

Only use Lithofin MN Colour Intensifier on honed, brushed, or flamed limestone. For polished limestone, use Lithofin MN Stain-Stop (transparent, no colour change).

Mistake #5

Using too much water when cleaning

Why this is a problem

Limestone absorbs water like a sponge. Flooding the floor with water and leaving it to dry pushes minerals deeper into the stone and can cause efflorescence or watermarks.

How to fix it

Dry the surface immediately after cleaning. Persistent watermarks may need Lithofin MN Power-Clean treatment.

Prevention

Clean with a well-wrung mop - damp, not wet. Spray-and-wipe is better than bucket mopping for limestone.
