Old wax layers with trapped dirt - Combined Treatment Guide

Old wax layers with trapped dirt

Traditional cotto, terracotta, or stone floor with multiple layers of yellowed wax that has trapped dirt between layers over the years

Problems: Wax Residue + General CleaningSurfaces: Cotto Terracotta, Natural Stone, Artificial Stone

Why order matters

When two problems appear together, the treatment order is critical. Using the wrong product first can spread stains, neutralise chemicals, or cause new damage. Follow these steps in order.

Treatment Steps

  1. Step 1: Wax Residue

    Product: Lithofin WEXA

Why this order: All wax layers must be completely stripped before any cleaning can reach the actual stone surface. Cleaning on top of wax is ineffective.

Method: Apply WEXA undiluted. Leave 10-15 minutes until wax softens. Scrub with nylon brush or scrubbing machine with green pad. Remove dissolved wax with absorbent cloth. Repeat until scratch test shows no white line.

Wait: Rinse thoroughly with clean water, allow to dry 24-48 hours

  2. Step 2: General Cleaning

Product: Lithofin MN Power-Clean or Lithofin Cotto Easy-Clean (for cotto/terracotta)

Why this order: Dirt that was trapped between wax layers is now exposed on the bare stone surface and can be properly cleaned.

Method: Apply diluted 1:5. Leave 5-10 minutes. Scrub with brush. Rinse thoroughly. Allow to dry.

Wait: Wait 48 hours before applying new wax or sealant

Warnings

  • Stripping wax from cotto reveals the raw tile - it MUST be re-waxed or sealed within 48 hours
  • Work in sections of 2-3m² - do not let WEXA dry on the surface
  • Old wax may need 2-3 stripping passes for complete removal
