About Bluestone

Belgian Bluestone (Petit Granit) is a dense, dark blue-grey limestone quarried in the Hainaut province of Belgium. Despite its trade name 'Petit Granit', it is not a granite but a crinoidal limestone - formed from fossilised sea lily stems visible as white specks in the stone. It has been a cornerstone of Belgian and Northern European architecture for centuries.

As a calcareous stone, bluestone is sensitive to acids, which is the most important care consideration. Even diluted acid-based cleaners can etch the surface, leaving dull white marks. However, bluestone is considerably harder and denser than typical limestone, giving it excellent durability for both interior and exterior applications.

Bluestone is particularly popular for kitchen countertops in Belgium and the Netherlands, where its dark colour and cool surface make it both practical and beautiful. It develops a characteristic patina over time that many owners value. For kitchen use, thorough impregnation with a quality stain protector is essential to prevent oil and water stains.
