Marble Stone Care Guide
Properties, maintenance, and expert advice for marble surfaces
About Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock formed when limestone is subjected to extreme heat and pressure deep within the Earth's crust. This process recrystallises the calcite in the limestone, creating the characteristic veining and translucent quality that has made marble one of the most prized building materials for over 3,000 years. From the Parthenon to modern luxury kitchens, marble remains synonymous with elegance.
As a calcareous stone, marble is composed primarily of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). This makes it inherently sensitive to acids - even mild household acids like lemon juice, vinegar, or wine can cause etching (dull spots) on the surface within seconds. This is the single most important care consideration for marble owners.
Marble ranges from 2.5 to 5 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it relatively soft compared to granite. It absorbs liquids moderately quickly, so stain protection is essential, particularly for kitchen and bathroom applications. Despite these care requirements, properly maintained marble develops a beautiful patina over decades and can last centuries.
