5 Common Mistakes with Sandstone

5 Common Mistakes with Sandstone

Sandstone is the most porous of all natural stones. Without proper care, stains become permanent within hours. Most mistakes stem from underestimating how quickly sandstone absorbs liquids.

Mistake #1

Not sealing before first use

Why this is a problem

Unsealed sandstone absorbs everything - water, oil, wine, even sunscreen from bare feet. Once absorbed, stains sit deep inside the grain structure where no surface cleaner can reach.

How to fix it

For oil stains, try Lithofin MN Stain-Stop as a poultice. For general discolouration, deep clean with Lithofin MN Power-Clean, then seal immediately.

Prevention

Seal sandstone before it's ever walked on or exposed to weather. Apply Lithofin MN Stain-Stop in two coats for maximum protection.

Mistake #2

Pressure washing at full strength

Why this is a problem

Sandstone grains are held together by natural cement. High-pressure washing blasts away this cement, roughening the surface, opening pores wider, and accelerating weathering.

How to fix it

The damage is permanent - roughened sandstone can't be smoothed easily. Re-seal the roughened surface to prevent further degradation.

Prevention

Use maximum 60 bar pressure with a wide fan nozzle, held at least 30 cm from the surface. Better yet, use Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean and a stiff brush.

Mistake #3

Using acid-based patio cleaners

Why this is a problem

Many patio cleaners contain hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid). This dissolves the calcite cement between sandstone grains, causing the surface to crumble and become powdery within weeks.

How to fix it

No reversal possible for acid-damaged sandstone. Seal the affected area to slow further deterioration.

Prevention

Use only pH-neutral or mildly alkaline cleaners. Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean is specifically formulated for natural stone patios.

Mistake #4

Placing plant pots directly on sandstone

Why this is a problem

Water drains through the pot onto the stone. Tannic acid from soil and minerals in plant water create dark rings that penetrate deep into porous sandstone.

How to fix it

Lithofin MN Power-Clean can lighten these stains. Deep rings may need a poultice treatment left overnight.

Prevention

Always use saucers under pots, or elevate pots on feet. Seal the sandstone beneath planters with an extra coat.

Mistake #5

Applying sealer when the stone is damp

Why this is a problem

Sealant needs to penetrate into dry pores. If the stone contains moisture, the sealer sits on top, creating a white haze or flaking film instead of bonding with the stone.

How to fix it

Strip failed sealer with Lithofin MN Power-Clean. Let the stone dry for at least 48 hours (72 hours outdoors), then re-apply.

Prevention

Test with a moisture meter or tape test: tape clear plastic to the surface for 24 hours - if condensation forms underneath, the stone is too wet.
