15 frequently asked questions

Are marble and limestone the same thing?

Closely related but not identical. Marble IS limestone that has been recrystallised under heat and pressure (metamorphism). Both are calcareous (calcium carbonate) and acid-sensitive. Key differences: marble is generally harder (3-4 Mohs vs 2-3 for limestone), takes a higher polish, and has distinctive veining. Limestone is more uniformly coloured, often with fossil inclusions. Care is virtually identical: pH-neutral cleaners, no acids, seal with impregnator.

What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles?

Both are fired clay products, but porcelain is fired at higher temperatures (1200-1300°C vs 1000-1100°C for ceramic), making it denser, harder, and less water-absorbent (< 0.5% vs 3-6% for ceramic). Porcelain is suitable for outdoor use and heavy-traffic areas. Ceramic is typically used indoors. For care purposes, both are treated similarly with KF line products. Key difference: unglazed porcelain can still absorb stains and may need KF Protective Impregnator.

Recommended: Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator

Does the surface finish (honed vs polished) affect how I care for the stone?

Yes, significantly. Polished surfaces show etch marks and scratches more visibly, but are less porous (the polishing process partially closes pores). They need Polish Cream/Liquid for restoration but absorb less product when sealing. Honed (matte) surfaces hide imperfections better but are slightly more porous. They respond beautifully to Colour Intensifier. Tumbled and brushed surfaces are the most porous and need the most sealer. The stone type remains the same - only the product absorption and visibility of damage differs.

Recommended: Lithofin MN Polish Cream, Lithofin MN Colour Intensifier

Natural stone vs quartz composite - which is better for a kitchen?

Quartz composite is more practical: non-porous (factory-sealed), consistent colour, very low maintenance, heat-resistant up to ~150°C. Natural stone is more beautiful: each slab is unique, natural veining, develops character over time. Granite is the most practical natural stone for kitchens (hard, acid-resistant). Marble is the most beautiful but high-maintenance. Our recommendation: if you want low maintenance, choose quartz composite. If you value natural beauty and are willing to care for it, choose natural stone with proper Lithofin protection.

What is the difference between cotto and terracotta?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but there are differences. Cotto traditionally refers to Italian hand-made or artisan-produced tiles, typically irregular, highly porous, and fired at lower temperatures. Terracotta is a broader term for any fired clay tile. Machine-made terracotta is more uniform and slightly less porous than artisan cotto. For care purposes, both are treated identically - they are the most porous common flooring materials and MUST be sealed. Use TC line products for both.

What is the difference between an impregnator, a sealer, and a coating?

An impregnator penetrates the stone to provide internal protection against stains while maintaining the natural appearance. A sealer forms a protective layer on the surface, offering enhanced stain resistance. Coatings, on the other hand, create a thicker barrier that can alter the stone's appearance and may require more maintenance. For optimal results, consider using Lithofin MN Stain-Stop for impregnation.

What is the difference between pH neutral, alkaline, and acidic cleaners?

pH neutral cleaners are safe for all stone types and effectively remove dirt without damaging the surface. Alkaline cleaners are great for removing grease and heavy soil but may not be suitable for sensitive stones like marble. Acidic cleaners can effectively remove limescale but should be used cautiously on calcareous stones. For a safe option, use Lithofin MN Easy-Clean, which is pH neutral.

How does the care for natural stone differ from engineered stone?

Natural stone requires specific care to maintain its beauty and integrity, often needing impregnators and specialized cleaners. Engineered stone is generally more resistant to stains and scratches, allowing for easier maintenance with standard cleaners. However, both types benefit from regular cleaning and protection, such as with Lithofin products tailored for each stone type.

What are the differences between indoor and outdoor stone care products?

Indoor products are typically designed to be less aggressive and safe for use in enclosed spaces, while outdoor products are formulated to withstand weather conditions and UV exposure. Outdoor products often contain stronger protective agents to prevent moss and algae growth. For outdoor surfaces, consider using Lithofin Outdoor Cleaner and Lithofin MN Stain-Stop.

When should I use a daily cleaner versus a deep cleaner?

A daily cleaner is ideal for routine maintenance, helping to keep surfaces clean and free from light dirt. In contrast, a deep cleaner is necessary for periodic deep cleaning to remove embedded dirt and stains. Use Lithofin MN Easy-Clean for daily use and Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner for deeper cleaning tasks.

What is the difference between cream polish and liquid polish?

Cream polish is thicker and often provides a more intense shine, making it suitable for high-gloss finishes on stone. Liquid polish is easier to apply and may be better for regular maintenance, providing a subtle shine. For best results, use Lithofin WAX for a durable finish.

How does Lithofin compare to DIY/home remedies like vinegar?

While DIY remedies like vinegar can be effective for some cleaning tasks, they can damage sensitive stone surfaces such as marble and limestone. Lithofin products are specifically formulated to clean and protect stone without causing harm. For safe and effective cleaning, choose Lithofin MN Easy-Clean over vinegar.

What is the difference between water-based and solvent-based protection?

Water-based protection is generally safer for indoor use and easier to clean up, while solvent-based protection often provides a stronger, more durable seal. However, solvent-based products may emit stronger odors and require more ventilation during application. For effective sealing, consider Lithofin MN Stain-Stop as a water-based option.

What are the differences between spray application and brush application?

Spray application allows for even coverage and is ideal for large areas, while brush application provides more control and is better for detailed work. Depending on the product and surface, one method may be more effective than the other. For example, Lithofin products can be applied using either method, depending on your needs.

What is the difference between professional grade and consumer grade products?

Professional grade products are typically more concentrated and effective, designed for heavy-duty use in commercial settings. Consumer grade products are formulated for everyday use and may be less potent but are easier to handle. Lithofin offers both types, ensuring you have the right solution for your specific needs.
