Daily Maintenance - Expert Removal & Treatment Guide
Daily Maintenance - Expert Removal & Treatment Guide
What is Daily Maintenance?
Daily maintenance is the foundation of stone and tile care. Using the right product for regular cleaning keeps surfaces looking good, preserves protective treatments, and prevents the build-up that leads to intensive cleaning needs.
The single biggest mistake in stone maintenance is using the wrong cleaner. Supermarket 'all-purpose' cleaners often contain acids, surfactants, or waxes that damage or dull stone over time. Acid-based bathroom cleaners are particularly dangerous for marble and limestone. Even 'natural' vinegar-based cleaners destroy calcareous stone.
The ideal daily maintenance product is pH-neutral, leaves no residue, and is compatible with existing impregnation treatments. It should clean effectively at low concentration and leave the stone's natural beauty intact.
How to Identify It
You need to establish a daily maintenance routine if: you're currently using supermarket cleaners, your stone is losing its lustre, or you've just had new stone installed or deep-cleaned.
Common Causes
- Not a problem - daily maintenance prevents problems
- Regular foot traffic dirt
- Dust and atmospheric particles
- Mild splashes and spills
- Routine bathroom and kitchen soiling
Prevention
- This IS the prevention system
- Use correct pH-neutral products - not supermarket cleaners
- Damp mop regularly rather than infrequent heavy cleaning
- Rinse mop frequently in clean water
Treatment by Surface Type
Natural Stone
Risk level: Low
Lithofin MN Wash & Clean diluted as directed in mop water. Mop, no need to rinse. Also available: Lithofin MN Easy-Clean spray for quick daily touch-ups on countertops and small areas.
- Never use acid-based cleaners
- Never use vinegar, lemon, or citrus-based products
- Do not use excessive water on wood-look stone tiles
Ceramics
Risk level: Low
Lithofin KF Conditioning Cleaner for routine mopping. Dilute in mop water, clean, no rinse needed. Keeps grout and tiles clean without residue build-up.
- Avoid waxy cleaners that build up on tiles
- Grout lines need different care than tile faces
Artificial Stone
Risk level: Low
Lithofin EASY-CARE for general daily maintenance. pH-neutral, safe for all surfaces. For concrete: Lithofin MN Wash & Clean. For quartz composite: Lithofin EASY-CARE.
- Use pH-neutral products on quartz composite
- Concrete floors may need slightly stronger regular cleaning
Cotto Terracotta
Risk level: Low
Waxed cotto: Lithofin Cotto Easy-Clean (maintains wax layer). Impregnated cotto: Lithofin KF Conditioning Cleaner. Both used diluted in mop water.
- Waxed cotto needs wax-compatible cleaner
- Do not over-wet unsealed cotto
- Regular maintenance preserves the patina
When to Call a Professional
Routine daily maintenance should never require a professional. If your surface needs professional attention regularly, the initial sealing or product choice may be wrong - consult a stone care specialist for product advice.
