Stain Protection - Expert Removal & Treatment Guide
What is Stain Protection?
Stain protection (impregnation) is a preventive treatment that fills the microscopic pores of stone and tile with a water- and oil-repellent substance. Unlike a surface coating, a proper impregnator penetrates into the stone and works from within, leaving the surface texture and appearance unchanged while dramatically reducing the stone's ability to absorb liquids.
Impregnating a stone surface is the single most effective thing you can do to protect it. An impregnated surface gives you time to clean spills before they become stains. Water beads up and rolls off, oil sits on the surface instead of being absorbed. The stone still 'breathes' (allows water vapour to pass through), which is essential for preventing moisture entrapment.
The right product choice depends on the desired effect: Stain-Stop provides maximum protection (oil + water repellent), Basic Protection offers standard water and dirt repellency, and Colour Intensifier combines protection with colour enhancement.
How to Identify It
Your stone needs impregnation if: water drops absorb into the surface within 30 seconds instead of beading up. Perform the water drop test - place a few drops of water on the surface and time how quickly they absorb. Fully protected: water beads for 5+ minutes. Partially protected: water absorbs in 1-5 minutes. Unprotected: water absorbs within 30 seconds.
Common Causes
- Not a problem per se - stain protection is a preventive treatment
- Needed when: new stone is installed
- Existing protection has worn off (water no longer beads up)
- After deep cleaning that may have removed previous impregnation
- Stone is in a high-risk area (kitchen, bathroom, outdoor)
Prevention
- This IS the prevention - apply to all vulnerable stone surfaces
- Re-apply every 1-5 years depending on traffic and exposure
- Test if protection is still active: drop water on surface - if it beads up, protection is still working
Treatment by Surface Type
Natural Stone
Risk level: Low
Clean surface with appropriate cleaner. Allow to dry completely (24-48h). Apply Lithofin MN Stain-Stop evenly with cloth or sponge. Work in sections of 1-2m². Remove excess after 10-15 minutes. Allow 24 hours to cure. For very porous stone: apply two coats (second coat after 30 minutes).
- Surface must be completely clean and dry before application
- Do not apply in direct sunlight or on hot surfaces
- Remove excess product - pooling can leave marks
Ceramics
Risk level: Low
For unglazed porcelain: Lithofin KF Protective Impregnator. For grout lines: Lithofin KF Grout Protector. Apply, remove excess, allow to cure. Glazed tiles only need grout protection.
- Glazed ceramics generally don't need impregnation
- Unglazed porcelain and grout lines benefit from protection
Artificial Stone
Risk level: Medium
Concrete: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop or MN Basic Protection. Apply generously on porous concrete - may need two coats. For concrete pavers: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop. Terrazzo: Lithofin MN Stain-Stop as for marble.
- Concrete and concrete pavers highly benefit from impregnation
- Quartz composite usually comes pre-sealed - check manufacturer advice
- New concrete must cure 28 days before sealing
Cotto Terracotta
Risk level: High
Traditional: Lithofin TC Classic Primer + TC Classic Wax (warm patina). Modern: Lithofin TC Impregnator (invisible protection). Natural look: Lithofin TC Impregnator. Enhanced colour: Lithofin TC Ever-Sheen. Apply evenly, remove excess, allow 24h curing.
- Unsealed cotto is extremely vulnerable to staining
- Choose between traditional wax system or modern impregnation - not both
- Impregnation is essential for cotto in kitchens or wet areas
When to Call a Professional
Large commercial installations (lobbies, restaurants) benefit from professional application to ensure even coverage. Professional-grade equipment can also test the penetration depth and uniformity of the treatment.
