5 Common Mistakes with Ceramic Tiles
Ceramic tiles are forgiving - but their grout joints aren't. Most ceramic tile mistakes are actually grout mistakes or cleaning product mistakes that affect the overall look.
Mistake #1
Using too much water on unsealed grout
Why this is a problem
Ceramic glaze is waterproof, but standard grout is not. Excess water soaks into grout joints, encouraging mould growth and eventually weakening the grout from inside.
How to fix it
Remove mouldy grout with a grout rake and regrout. For surface mould, Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner with a grout brush works well.
Prevention
Seal grout joints with a grout sealer after installation. Use a damp mop, not a wet one.
Mistake #2
Mixing different cleaning products
Why this is a problem
Combining an acid cleaner with a bleach cleaner creates toxic chlorine gas. People sometimes pour one product over another in bathrooms, creating a genuine health hazard.
How to fix it
Ventilate immediately and leave the area. Rinse the surface thoroughly with water before applying any other product.
Prevention

Ignoring cracked or missing grout
Why this is a problem
Cracked grout lets water behind the tiles. In wet areas (showers, splashbacks), this leads to mould growth behind tiles, tile loosening, and eventually structural damage to walls.

Remove damaged grout and regrout. If tiles are loose, check the substrate for water damage before reinstalling.
Prevention
Inspect grout annually. Repair hairline cracks immediately with flexible grout or silicone in movement joints.

Using dark grout with light tiles without sealing
Why this is a problem
Dark grout pigment can bleed into porous unglazed tile edges during cleaning, creating a permanent dark halo around each tile. This is especially common with terracotta-look ceramics.
How to fix it
Very difficult to reverse. Prevention is the only reliable approach.
Prevention
Seal tile edges before grouting with dark grout. Wipe excess grout immediately during installation.
Mistake #5
Applying sealer to glazed ceramic tiles
Why this is a problem
Glazed tiles are already sealed by their glaze. Adding a sealer creates a film that traps dirt, turns cloudy over time, and provides zero benefit.
How to fix it
Strip the unnecessary sealer with Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner or Lithofin Wax-Off.
Prevention
Only seal grout joints, not the glazed tile surface. Unglazed tiles can benefit from sealing.
