Properties, maintenance, and expert advice for sandstone surfaces
About Sandstone
Sandstone is a sedimentary rock formed from compacted sand grains - primarily quartz - cemented together by silica, calcite, or iron oxide over millions of years. Its warm, earthy colours and natural texture have made it a popular choice for both traditional and contemporary architecture, particularly in exterior applications.
The defining characteristic of sandstone is its extreme porosity. It can absorb water like a sponge, which means stains penetrate deeply and quickly if the surface is not properly sealed. This makes impregnation with a quality stain protector not just recommended but absolutely essential - ideally applied before or immediately after installation.
Most sandstones are siliceous (quartz-based) and therefore acid-resistant, unlike marble or limestone. However, some varieties contain calcareous binders, so it is always advisable to test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first. Sandstone is moderately hard but can erode over time in exposed outdoor settings, developing a weathered character that many find attractive.
Characteristics
- Sedimentary rock (quartz grains)

- Weathers attractively over time
Common Uses
- Garden walls and paths
- Outdoor terraces

Care Essentials
- Seal immediately after installation - absolutely critical
- Apply two coats of impregnator due to extreme porosity
- Pre-wet before applying any cleaning product to reduce absorption
- Re-seal every 2-3 years for outdoor applications
