About Slate

Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock formed from mudstone or shale under intense pressure. Its natural tendency to split into thin, flat sheets (foliation) has made it a roofing material for centuries and a popular choice for flooring, particularly in rustic and contemporary settings.

Slate is relatively hard and dense with low porosity, making it naturally resistant to moisture and staining. Most slate is siliceous and therefore acid-resistant, though some varieties from certain quarries may contain calcareous minerals. Its distinctive cleft surface texture provides natural slip resistance, making it excellent for entryways and wet areas.

The natural beauty of slate lies in its layered texture and rich colour palette - from dark charcoals and blacks to greens, purples, and rusty reds. Slate-Oil is the traditional enhancement product that brings out these colours beautifully while providing protection. Properly maintained slate floors can last well over a century.
