Caring for stone pool surrounds

Caring for stone pool surrounds

Pool areas combine the toughest challenges: chlorinated water, sunscreen, constant wet-dry cycles, and bare feet. The stone needs to stay safe, clean, and beautiful through summer.

For: Pool owners, hospitality with pool areas, landscape contractors

1

Pre-season preparation (April-May)

Before the pool opens for the season, clean and seal the surround. This is your one chance to prepare before constant water exposure begins.

Product: Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean

Deep clean the entire surround. Remove winter algae and debris. Pay attention to the coping stones (pool edge) - these get the most water splash. Let dry for 48 hours before sealing.

2

Seal with anti-slip treatment

Pool surrounds MUST be slip-safe. A wet stone surface with bare feet and running children is a liability.

Product: Lithofin MN Anti-Slip

Apply Lithofin MN Anti-Slip to all walking surfaces around the pool. Also apply to steps and ramps. Test grip when wet before the pool season starts. Re-apply if the surface feels slippery under a wet foot test.

3

Weekly summer maintenance

Chlorinated splash water, sunscreen, and body oils create a film on the stone that builds up weekly. Left untreated, it becomes slippery and permanently stains light stone.

Product: Lithofin MN Wash & Clean

Brush the surround weekly with Lithofin MN Wash & Clean diluted in water. Focus on the 1-metre zone around the pool edge where splash water concentrates. Rinse toward drainage, not into the pool.

4

End of season (September-October)

Before closing the pool, deep clean the surround one final time. Winter moisture on dirty stone accelerates algae growth and staining.

Product: Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean

Full deep clean as in spring. Check the sealant with the water-drop test. Re-seal if needed - the stone will be dry enough in autumn for good sealant adhesion.

Pro Tips

  • Choose a flamed or bush-hammered finish for pool coping - never polished. No sealant can make polished stone safe enough for a pool edge
  • Place an outdoor foot shower near the pool entrance to rinse sunscreen from feet before walking on stone
  • Chlorinated water permanently bleaches some stone colours over years. Choose acid-resistant stone (granite, basalt) for coping directly at the water's edge
  • If you see white deposits on pool coping, it's limescale from evaporating splash water. Clean monthly to prevent buildup - Lithofin MN Wash & Clean is safe for pool edges
