5 Common Mistakes with Basalt

5 Common Mistakes with Basalt

Basalt is extremely hard and acid-resistant - almost the opposite of marble. But this toughness leads to overconfidence. These mistakes happen when people think basalt needs no care at all.

Mistake #1

Never cleaning textured basalt pavers

Why this is a problem

Basalt's rough, flamed texture traps dirt, algae, and organic debris in its micro-cavities. Years of neglect create a biological layer that's much harder to remove than regular dirt.

How to fix it

Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean removes organic growth. For deeply embedded dirt, apply undiluted, scrub with a stiff brush, and rinse after 20 minutes.

Prevention

Clean outdoor basalt at least twice a year - spring and autumn. A quick brush and rinse prevents buildup.

Mistake #2

Assuming colour enhancer is reversible

Why this is a problem

Basalt colour enhancers penetrate deeply into the dense stone. Once applied, the wet-look effect is effectively permanent. If you don't like the result, removal is extremely difficult.

How to fix it

Lithofin MN Power-Clean may lighten the effect slightly over multiple applications, but complete removal is rarely possible.

Prevention

Always test colour enhancer on a scrap piece or hidden area. Wait 24 hours to see the final result before committing to the full surface.

Mistake #3

Using the wrong adhesive and blaming the stone

Why this is a problem

Basalt is so dense that standard cement adhesive doesn't bond well. Tiles can come loose, and people blame the stone rather than the installation method.

How to fix it

Loose tiles must be re-laid with a flexible, polymer-modified tile adhesive designed for natural stone.

Prevention

Use a white, flexible tile adhesive rated for dense natural stone. Back-butter both the tile and the substrate.

Mistake #4

Ignoring efflorescence on exterior basalt

Why this is a problem

Even dense basalt can develop salt deposits if the substrate retains moisture. The white crystals contrast starkly against dark basalt and can indicate a waterproofing failure.

How to fix it

Remove salt deposits with Lithofin MN Builders' Clean. Investigate and fix the moisture source.

Prevention

Ensure proper drainage and waterproofing underneath exterior basalt installations.

Mistake #5

Skipping anti-slip treatment for wet basalt

Why this is a problem

Polished or honed basalt becomes extremely slippery when wet. In bathroom or pool-deck applications, this is a genuine safety hazard.

How to fix it

Apply Lithofin MN Anti-Slip to restore grip without changing the stone's appearance.

Prevention

Always specify a flamed or bush-hammered finish for wet areas. If polished basalt is already installed in a wet area, treat with anti-slip product immediately.
