5 Common Mistakes with Clinker Tiles

5 Common Mistakes with Clinker Tiles

Clinker tiles are dense, frost-resistant, and low-maintenance. But the combination of extreme weather exposure and incorrect cleaning creates avoidable problems.

Mistake #1

Using acid cleaner on fresh mortar joints

Why this is a problem

Clinker is often laid with wide mortar joints. Acid cleaning to remove mortar haze also attacks the mortar joints themselves, weakening them from day one.

How to fix it

Re-point damaged mortar joints. For future cleaning, use a more diluted solution.

Prevention

Wet the clinker thoroughly before applying Lithofin KF Cement Residue Remover. This reduces acid absorption into the mortar. Work in small sections and rinse quickly.

Mistake #2

Ignoring white staining (efflorescence)

Why this is a problem

White salt deposits on clinker aren't just cosmetic - they signal moisture movement through the wall or floor. Left untreated, salt crystallisation can crack the clinker surface.

How to fix it

Brush off loose salt, then clean with Lithofin MN Builders' Clean. Address the moisture source (rising damp, missing DPC, etc.).

Prevention

Ensure proper damp-proof courses in walls and drainage under floors. Seal exterior clinker with Lithofin MN Stain-Stop.

Mistake #3

Applying colour enhancer to all clinker types

Why this is a problem

Glazed clinker tiles don't absorb colour enhancer - it pools on the surface and creates a sticky film. Only unglazed, matt clinker benefits from colour enhancement.

How to fix it

Remove surface film from glazed clinker with Lithofin KF Intensive Cleaner.

Prevention

Test on a hidden area first. Only apply Lithofin MN Colour Intensifier to unglazed, absorbent clinker.

Mistake #4

Power washing at close range

Why this is a problem

Clinker is hard, but the mortar joints between tiles are not. Close-range pressure washing blasts out mortar, leaving deep channels that hold water and accelerate freeze-thaw damage.

How to fix it

Re-point damaged mortar joints with frost-resistant mortar.

Prevention

Keep the nozzle at least 30 cm from the surface. Use a 25-40 degree fan nozzle, not a zero-degree pencil jet.

Mistake #5

Not cleaning clinker steps for anti-slip

Why this is a problem

Clinker steps in entrance areas build up a fine film of dirt, algae, and shoe residue. When wet, this invisible film becomes dangerously slippery - especially in autumn and winter.

How to fix it

Clean with Lithofin MN Outdoor-Clean to remove organic growth. Apply Lithofin MN Anti-Slip to restore grip.

Prevention

Clean entrance steps twice a year. A quick brush with Lithofin KF Wash & Clean every few weeks prevents buildup.
