About Dolomite

Dolomite (also called dolostone) is a sedimentary rock composed primarily of calcium magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2). Visually, it closely resembles marble - white or light grey with soft veining - which leads to frequent confusion in the market. Many stones sold as "Super White marble" or "white quartzite" are actually dolomite.

Dolomite sits between marble and quartzite in hardness and acid sensitivity. It is slightly harder than marble (Mohs 3.5-4 vs marble's 3) and reacts more slowly to acid. While marble fizzes immediately with vinegar, dolomite reacts slowly over 15-30 seconds. This partial acid sensitivity means dolomite requires the same acid-free care regime as marble, but is somewhat more forgiving of brief accidental contact.

The magnesium content gives dolomite slightly better scratch resistance than pure marble, making it a practical compromise for homeowners who love the marble look but want marginally more durability. However, it is still a calcareous stone that requires careful maintenance - it is not the "worry-free marble alternative" that some sellers claim.

Characteristics

  • Calcium magnesium carbonate
  • Sedimentary rock
  • Harder than marble, softer than quartzite
  • Partially acid-sensitive (slow reaction)
  • Often mislabelled as marble or quartzite
  • Intermediate durability

Common Uses

  • Kitchen countertops
  • Bathroom vanities
  • Floor tiles
  • Wall cladding
  • Fireplace surrounds

Popular Varieties

  • Super White (brilliant white, grey veining - most popular)
  • Fantasy Brown (brown and grey waves)
  • Iceberg Blue (blue-grey tones)
  • Dolomite Grey (uniform medium grey)
  • Mont Blanc (pure white, minimal veining)

Care Essentials

  • Treat as acid-sensitive - use pH-neutral cleaners only
  • Seal after installation to prevent staining
  • Slightly more forgiving than marble but still requires care
  • Wipe acidic spills within minutes (not seconds like marble)
  • Clean with Lithofin MN Wash & Clean
  • Re-seal every 2-3 years

Common Problems

  • Acid etching (slower than marble but still occurs)
  • Mislabelling confusion with marble and quartzite
  • Staining on unsealed surfaces
  • Scratching from grit and abrasives
  • Yellowing in some white varieties
