Scratches - Expert Removal & Treatment Guide

Difficulty: ★★☆☆☆ Estimated time: 30-60 minutes per m²

What is Scratches?

Surface scratches and dulling on polished stone surfaces can occur due to various factors, including improper cleaning methods, the use of abrasive materials, or general wear and tear. These scratches not only mar the aesthetic appeal of the stone but can also lead to further deterioration if not addressed promptly. Dulling can occur when the surface loses its shine, often due to the buildup of dirt or residues that have not been adequately cleaned, or from the natural aging process of the stone.

How to Identify It

Scratches appear as visible linear depressions in the stone surface - run your finger across: you will feel a groove. Key distinction from etching: a scratch is a physical groove (linear, often with sharp edges), while an etch mark is a chemical dull spot (flat, no groove, often circular from a glass or droplet). Light scratches appear as fine white lines on dark stone or dull lines on polished stone. Deep scratches catch your fingernail. On honed or matte surfaces, scratches are harder to spot - look at an angle with a flashlight. Scratches from furniture have straight edges; scratches from grit have random, multi-directional patterns.

Common Causes

  • Using abrasive cleaning pads or harsh chemicals
  • Dragging heavy objects across the surface
  • Improper maintenance or cleaning techniques
  • Exposure to high foot traffic without adequate protection
  • Accidental impacts from hard objects

Prevention

  • Use soft cloths or non-abrasive pads for cleaning
  • Apply protective sealants to reduce wear
  • Regularly maintain the surface with appropriate Lithofin products
  • Avoid dragging heavy items across the surface
  • Clean spills immediately to prevent staining and scratching
