About Quartz Composite

Quartz composite (engineered stone) is a manufactured material consisting of approximately 90-95% ground natural quartz bound together with polymer resins. Brands such as Silestone, Caesarstone, and Dekton have made this one of the most popular countertop materials worldwide, combining the beauty of natural stone with superior performance.

The resin binder makes quartz composite virtually non-porous, meaning it resists staining far better than natural stone and typically does not require sealing. It is available in a vast range of colours and patterns, including convincing marble and granite lookalikes, as well as modern solid colours not found in nature.

However, quartz composite has limitations. The resin component can be damaged by excessive heat - placing a hot pan directly on the surface can cause thermal shock and discolouration. It is also not UV-stable, making it unsuitable for outdoor applications. Care should be taken to use only pH-neutral to mildly alkaline cleaners, as strong chemicals can dull the surface finish over time.

Characteristics

  • 90-95% natural quartz + polymer resin
  • Virtually non-porous
  • Consistent colour and pattern
  • Not heat-resistant (resin sensitivity)
  • Not UV-stable (interior only)

Common Uses

  • Kitchen countertops
  • Bathroom vanities
  • Interior wall cladding
  • Commercial surfaces
  • Bar tops

Popular Varieties

  • Polished finish (glossy, low maintenance)
  • Honed/matte finish (softer look, needs sealing)
  • Textured/leathered finish
  • Veined patterns (marble-look)
  • Solid colours

Care Essentials

  • Use only pH-neutral to mildly alkaline cleaners
  • Never place hot pans directly on the surface - use trivets
  • Sealing generally not required (only honed/matte finishes)
  • Avoid abrasive pads that scratch polished surfaces
  • Not suitable for outdoor or direct sunlight exposure

Common Problems

  • Heat damage from hot pans (discolouration)
  • Staining of honed/matte finishes
  • Chemical dulling from harsh cleaners
  • Limescale in bathroom settings
