Basalt - Stone Care Guide
Basalt Stone Care Guide
Properties, maintenance, and expert advice for basalt surfaces
About Basalt
Basalt is a dense, dark volcanic rock formed from rapidly cooling lava flows. It is one of the most abundant rocks on Earth's surface and one of the hardest natural stones used in construction. Its fine-grained, uniform texture and deep dark colour - from dark grey to almost black - give it a modern, sophisticated appearance.
With a Mohs hardness of 6-7 and very low porosity, basalt is exceptionally durable and requires minimal maintenance. It is fully acid-resistant and frost-proof, making it ideal for demanding applications both indoors and outdoors. Its natural density means it resists staining far better than most other natural stones.
Basalt is increasingly popular in contemporary architecture for its clean, dark aesthetic. It works particularly well for outdoor paving, facade cladding, and modern kitchen designs. While it rarely needs sealing, a protective impregnator can enhance its longevity in high-traffic commercial settings.
